The Primary Care Working Group of the Dukes County Health Council was established in February of 2003 for the express goal realizing the Council’s mission of building a comprehensive, integrated system of primary care for Martha’s Vineyard. Membership of the PCWG is comprised of consumers, clinicians – including both western and alternative/complementary practitioners, as well as representatives of major Island health care institutions and services including: Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, the Wampanoag Tribe, Martha’s Vineyard Community Services, the Rural Health Clinic, the Vineyard Health Care Access Program, and Veteran’s Affairs.
The PCWG recently submitted a Rural Health Network Development Planning Grant to the Federal government’s Department of Rural Health. The purpose of this grant is to create the foundation on which to build an integrated system of primary care for Martha’s Vineyard.
Other current projects include mapping primary care services presently available on the Island, identifying gaps in services, and updating the Health Professional Shortage Area designations for physical, mental, and dental health care providers.
