How can I purchase a beach sticker?
People on the island can purchase them at the County Administration Building.  Otherwise they can be purchased online or by mail.

Can I camp out on the beach?
Camping is not allowed.

Can I bring my dog to the beach?
In the summer season dogs are not permitted on the beach between 9:00am and 5:00pm.  At all times of the year they must be kept on a leash.  Dogs are not permitted within 100 yards of posted bird nesting areas (April to August).

Can I have a fire on the beach?
Open fires are not allowed but you may use a grill provided you douse the hot coals with water and bury them before you leave.

Are there life guards on the beach?
County beaches do not have lifeguards but there are lifeguards at nearby town beaches.

Can I have a party/clam bake on the beach?
Yes, but you must obtain a permit from the Beach Manager.

Are there any type of facilities on the beach?
There may be limited facilities depending on the beach.  There are no facilities at Eastville Point Beach.  On Joseph Sylvia State Beach there are vendors that sell food and beverages. The closest public rest rooms for Joseph Sylvia State Beach and Eastville Point Beach are in the nearby towns.  Norton Point Beach has no bathrooms although the neighboring South Beach State Park and Wasqu Reservation have porta potties in season.

Is there handicapped access to the beach?
Joseph Sylvia State Beach has one Universal Access ramp and parking on the Oak Bluffs side of the beach.

What birds are on the beach and which ones are protected?
A wide variety of species nest on the beach but only two of them are protected by State and Federal Endangered Species laws.  The piping plover is both state and federally listed and the least tern is state listed.

How can I help protect the nesting birds?
The most important thing to do is to stay out of the posted bird nesting areas.  If you see people inside these posted areas please remind them that they should not be there.  And if you are interested in helping us mopnitor these species please contact the Beach Manager.

Where can I get a permit for clamming?
At the town hall of the town where you live.

Where can I drive on the beach?
Driving on the beach is only permitted on Norton Point Beach if you have a four-wheel drive vehicle with a current year's beach permit.

Why do I have to reduce the tire pressure to 15 pounds per square inch when I drive on the beach?
Reducing the tire pressure provides more tire surface area that comes in contact with the beach, reducing the per square inch weight of your vehicle.  It will thus be easier to drive on the beach, reducing strain on your engine, reducing the chances of your getting stuck, and greatly reducing the impact your vehicle has on the beach.

Why does it get so bumpy when I drive on the vehicle trail?
Because tires that are not properly deflated cause the trail to become washboarded.
