The training resources of the Dukes County Sheriff’s Office include our training division, local island professionals, the training staffs from other Massachusetts County Sheriff’s Offices and the Massachusetts Department of Corrections Training Staff.
Our full time training officer, Lt. Donald Rose, attends the Massachusetts Sheriffs Association’s Education and Training Committee’s monthly meetings as scheduled in the various counties throughout the state. A wealth of current information and changes in the laws and their effects on training are discussed and necessary changes are implemented in the Massachusetts Sheriffs Association’s lesson plans. The Department of Correction recognizes these lesson plans and all of the county sheriff’s offices use them.
The Department of Correction’s Policy Development Compliance Unit makes semi-annual audits of county correctional facilities. In the spring of FY 2001 the training records, reports, and policies were one of the primary focuses of the Compliance Unit. The personnel training records were found to be in compliance.
Our training goals continue to not only meet the standards of the Department of Corrections, but also stay current with the changes in law and the recommendations of the American Correctional Association, American Jail Association, Municipal Police Training Committee, Massachusetts Standards Committee, National Institute of Corrections, and the National Sheriffs’ Association.
