The Youth Task Force 508-696-5304 is the lead agency on MV for substance abuse prevention focusing on targeting youth ages 12-26. They conduct surveys and promote the positive social norms through campains and programs stated above.

  • D.A.R.E. Program - Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program run by the Dukes County Sherrif's Office officer-led series of classroom lessons that teaches children how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug and violence-free lives. 508-627-3784
  • Medical care integration - early intervention and assessment screenings during the medical appointment, which allows for early detection of substance abuse and guidance for managing anxiety, depression, and stress related issues; collaboration with medical partners improves access to specialty care and can aid in the prevention of potential substance dependence:

Adolescent Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral for Treatment for Alcohol and Other Drug Use (SBIRT)         Mass Child Psychiatry Access Project - connecting Primary Care with Child Psychiatry to meet the needs of children with behavioral health concerns.
  • Pain medication management/monitoring, prescription practices - Center for Pain Management (MV Hospital) -High Risk Care Management 508-957-0188 (referrals from Primary Care doctors of patients using opioids; they utilize Mass General pain specialist through telemedicine or send patient to pain psychologist in Boston) On-line resource: PainEDU
  • Medication Dropboxes for safe disposal of prescription medications - available at Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, Tisbury, West Tisbury Police Stations
  • Safe Sharps Drop-off - for safe disposal of used needles and syrenges- available at MV Hospital - Safe Sharps Drop-Off Program
  • Law enforcement
        Martha's Vineyard Drug Task Force is collaborative effort of the island police departments to locate and investigate illicit drug distribution, it has a K-9 unit as well.
        Narcan is available for all island police departments and EMS (except for Chilmark PD which will be ready by the summer, the Tri-town EMS has it now)
