Dune Restoration

The County of Dukes County receives an annual grant from the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) to aid in State Beach protection.

The Barrier Beach Task Force, consisting of many stakeholders, helps the County determine the best approach to responsible stewardship of the beach. The Friends of Sengekontacket (FOS), a non-profit organization throught their dedicated volunteers helps with the long-term planning and management of the beach.

Over the years there has been periodic beach nourishment with sand as well as Beach Grass Planting

The latest project of dune restoration on the Joseph A. Sylvia State Beach includes installation of snow fencing, biomimicry and planting of beach grass and additional native plants. We installed the snow fencing and the shamps in November 2015.

The first picture was taken at pathway 40 on 12/12/2015 when biomimicry was first installed. The second in same place taken 03/24/2016.  Some stakes near fence are completely covered. The third picture is at PW44, taken 03/24/2016, showing detail of fill in around shims. There is also sand build up behind fences without biomimicry.
