Fuel Assistance

South Shore Community Action Council (SSCAC) provides eligible households with fuel assistance during the period of Nov. 1st-April 30th.
 
Please call (508) 696-3844 to make an appointment with Dukes County Social Services (DCSS) so that we may better assist you in the Fuel Assistance process.
 
Applications maybe obtained from the DCSS office at 9 Airport Rd., Edgartown.
 

To apply you will need the following:

Proof of income (or lack of income)
Last 4 weeks gross income for everyone in the household 18 years and older. All income must be documented such as Child Support, Odd Jobs, Veterans, Pension, TAFDC, Social Security, etc.
 
  • Any adult receiving income for a minor must have proof of that income.
  • For the Self Employed, a copy of 2018 Federal Tax Return with pages and schedules.
  • Full Time Students need documentation from the school or college.

You will also need:

  • Complete Electric Bill
  • Heating Bill
  • Mortgage, Homeowners Insurance, Real Estate Tax or lease.
  • Photo ID
  • Social Security Cards and Birth Dates for all in household

Am I Eligible for Fuel Assistance?

Eligibility is based on gross income, household size, and vulnerability to heating costs. Fuel Assistance can assist with any primary heat type: oil, natural gas, electricity, propane, kerosene, wood or coal.
Also, if you are living in nonsubsidized housing and your heat is included in your rent, fuel assistance can reimburse you for a portion of your rent.
If you are renting an apartment that is subsidized and the cost of heat is included in your rent, you may not be eligible for the fuel assistance program; however, you may wish to apply to be enrolled in a Massachusetts utility discount program strictly based on income. In Massachusetts, the eligible income guidelines extend to households with incomes up to 60% of the State median income.

Processing of Applications:

It takes about 4-6 weeks for SSCAC to process applications. You will receive a letter in the mail within that timeframe as to your status. If your application has been accepted, SSCAC will send funds directly to your fuel provider. If your application is incomplete, they will notify you by mail with a request for additional documents or forms. You may also call SSCAC’s assistance line at (508) 746-6707 and follow the prompts to hear an automated message of the status of your application.
