Airport

Martha's Vineyard Airport, situated at the geographical center of the Island, was originally constructed by the Navy as a training field for pilots during World War II. The airport was transferred to Dukes County for the purpose of operating a civilian airport in 1959. Today it is one of the 10 busiest airports in New England. It welcomes more than 300,000 passengers a year at its modern terminal.
 
The Airport Commission is responsible for the care and management of the one square mile of land upon which the airport is located. The main responsibilities include updating airport facilities & equipment to assure that the aiport continues to provide a safe, reliable and efficient travel option to the public. The one-mile-square airport also embraces a business park that is home to more than 75 companies.
